Staff visit new building, Friday 6th November 2009

Hackney Free and Parochial staff have visited the first section of the new school building, on schedule to be completed in the Summer Term 2010, for the first time.

During a recent INSET day, teachers and support staff met with contractors, McLaren, for a builder’s breakfast in the school canteen before being taken on a tour of the building, which will include classrooms and the school’s assembly hall.

Dressed in hard hats and high visibility jackets, the excited group were guided around the site by Assistant Head (BSF Lead) Joanne Williams.

“It was great to see the progress that McClaren have made, all the floors are in and the roof is on!” Joanne said.

“We are excited about the new facilities and what impact it will have on our school community our students’ learning.”

This was the first opportunity staff had been given to see behind the scenes of the building site, since work began last year.

PE teacher and Head of Year 8 Mario Massimino said: “After looking at drawings and designs for the new building it was brilliant to see everything coming together and get a feel for how the new building will be when it’s finished. I’m really looking forward to teaching in such an amazing space and making use of the new ICT equipment.””

As you can see from the pictures below the new building has state of the art facilities and a truly inspirational design to it.

The project will take over 2 years to complete but we have planned our building work to minimise disruption to learning and teaching.

Phase 1

This will take a year as the east block is built on the sports/playground facilities at the back of our site. This will not affect classroom teaching and we have a flexible plan to allow students to take part in sport activities in alternative venues such as Kings Hall Leisure Centre and London Fields Lido. As a Sports College and an Extended School it is very important to us that we continue to offer high quality PE and out of hours activities.

Phase 2

At the end of Phase 1 the East wing will be complete and the majority of our teachers will move classrooms. Students will then be able to access this new block. Some teaching will still take place in the old building whilst we build our new West building including our sports hall and dining facilities.

Final Phase

When Phase 2 has come to an end our new school will be complete and we will spend the next 6 months completing our 2 multi use games areas and staff parking facilities.

We are really excited about these developments and hope you will share that with us and look forward to sharing the school’s amenities.
