GIFTED & TALENTED
As an EiC school, we have been part of the Gifted and Talented strategy since its inception in 1999. The definition of gifted refers to students with high ability or potential in academic subjects and talented, to those with high ability or potential in the expressive or creative arts or sport. Clearly some students show ability across the curriculum and are both gifted and talented. We currently identify 10% of each Year group using a variety of information e.g. end of Year 6 and Year 9 national tests, CAT tests, teacher nomination, parent and peer nomination.
These students are the most able in our school. They are offered opportunities to develop their abilities and interests outside of the curriculum. The following examples give an idea of some events from the current year. We have 7 student members of the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth, some of whom will attend University summer schools. Eight gifted mathematicians are following the 2 year SHINE-EPGY Maths programme. The PE Department run a Summer school for talented Year 6 and 7 athletes annually. We have participated in challenge days at Cambridge University and both Science and Mathematics taster sessions at Oxford University.
