WELCOME TO THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

As an English Department we believe that learning is an active rather than a passive process and therefore our teaching methods reflect this belief. We aim to use strategies within teaching and learning that promote collaboration between students and which give them respect and responsibility as part of the learning process.

The general aim is to help develop a complete and confident range of competences in all language skills, broadly grouped as; SPEAKING & LISTENING, READING, WRITING & REFLECTION. The student’s world is structured and seen through language and we hope to help students enjoy, understand and interact successfully with that world.

Since all students arrive at secondary school having acquired to a varying degree, an impressive range of language resources, our job is to respect and build upon the cultural diversity of their language in order to ensure progress. Within that, we understand that we have a responsibility to develop the skills of language in its ‘standard’ form, helping our students achieve a high level of accuracy and competence. Our overriding philosophy is that ‘language is power’ and as such, it is our job to empower our students within the world at large.
