LEARNING DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

The Learning Development Department is an active department whose aim is to support students who have additional learning needs. We understand that at different times students have different needs and we provide individualised timetables of support accordingly.

SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS

We can support students learning in the following ways:

In the Classroom through

  • In-class support from a variety of In-class support teachers
  • Access to differentiated work in line with individual strengths and needs

Outside the Classroom through

  • An Individual Support teacher with “key work” responsibility and overall responsibility for monitoring progress over the year.
  • Small Nurture group sessions
  • Small Literacy group sessions
  • Study skills/homework clubs
  • 1:1 mentoring sessions with the SENCO
  • Support from a Year 10 or 11 “buddy”
  • Support from key members of staff including form tutors and Head of Year

PARENTS AND CARERS

We aim to work closely with parents in the following ways:

  • Regular phone calls and written contact with home depending on pupils needs
  • Regular reviews with parents of student’s progress. These are carried out at Parent evenings, target setting days, termly, interim and annual reviews.
  • The Parent Support Group runs every half term. It is an open forum at which parents can get information about any area of special educational needs.

MONITORING OF STUDENT PROGRESS

It is important that we monitor pupils learning to ensure they are making adequate progress. We do this by:

  • Observing students in-class both formally and informally
  • Looking at students classwork and homework
  • Using Individual Education Plans to both set and review targets
  • Monitoring pupil’s exam results from Year 6 to Year 11
  • Talking to students subject teachers
